A while back, I read this post on Dan Pierce’s wonderful blog, Single Dad Laughing. Go ahead, click where it says “this post” in the last sentence. Read the post—it won’t take you long. I’ll wait.

Well, if you didn’t read the post, it’s about journaling. Earlier this week, I talked about my own brand-new(ish) foray into keeping a journal. I also promised that I’d elaborate. If you’d like me to, please feel free to read on. If not, here’s a cool video that I dare you not to laugh at. Enjoy the video, and I’ll see you next time.

If you’re still here, let’s get to it.

I was sitting at work the other day, and as I often do, I was writing. Just before Christmas, I bought myself a new journal (Hooray for Composition notebooks for $1 at my local closeout store!). A lot of the books I’ve been reading (about writing, sometimes written by a famous writer from another generation) suggest “journaling” as an outlet. So, I’ve made up my mind to use my writing talent to help myself get through anything I’m dealing with. Nearly every day since I started, I’ve written something, and I have to say: It really has helped me realize some things. I’d recommend it to anyone.

I’ll be writing a more detailed post about keeping a journal soon. But that’s not the topic for today, so I’m writing this note to force myself to get to the point.

For some strange reason, I’d been doing a lot of thinking about the turning of the new year. I don’t often find myself, on New Year’s Eve, reflecting on the happenings of the past 364 days. But this year, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I sat down last week and began an outline of my goals for the year. Anyway, I decided that I’d write about my goals in my journal. And then I thought: Why not share a few of them on my blog? What better way to begin 2012—on the blog that I named after myself—than to talk about my goals?

Get to Know Your Blogger

Have you ever read a book, or an article, or seen a movie or a show, that you absolutely loved? Did you ever find yourself wishing you could see/read everything that person had a part in? And then, has your admiration grown to the point where you wished you could talk to the person behind the work? Maybe you have a question you’re dying to ask that person, or something you’d really love to know. Or maybe you just want to know anything that person wants to share.

Get to Know Your Blogger

Earlier this month, I did a brief summary of my history as a blogger. In it, I talked about a popular weekly post series I used to write called Get to Know Your Blogger. Writing those posts gave me some of the most fun experiences I’ve had as a writer. Even though this blog is named after me, and the words all come from me and from my opinions, I reserved some very special stuff for GTKYB every week.

The Fourth Blog

On Friday, I briefly (read: “briefly”) went over three of the major blogging projects I’ve started during the past few months. I also talked about some of my plans for the future of those projects, and a few others. Just prior to the premature demise of those three blogs, another bout of inspiration hit me, and I began to work on a fourth.

If you know me, or you’ve followed my work, you know by now that writing is one of my favorite things to do. I’ve probably gone so far as to call it one of my “passions,” but I think that sounds a bit silly. It’s something I enjoy, something that comes somewhat easily to me (at least based on the comments I get from friends and family), and it’s one of the few things I can comfortably say I’m pretty good at.

There Have Been Updates

It’s cold outside. But that doesn’t matter much to me today. Right now, I’m sitting here typing this, and later, I’ll get in my giant metal box and drive to work, where I sit in a different giant metal box. Funny how the world works, isn’t it?

The above statement has absolutely nothing to do with today’s post. I just thought it’d be a nice, breezy way to start things off.

So there I was, quietly making my way in the world. I had embraced the working world, and come to terms with the failure, or at least the long-term stalling, of nearly all of my Internet business projects. I hadn’t completely given up, mind you; I’ve continued studying business-related materials, and reading about the lives of my favorite successful people. And my work has continued to flow, privately. Sure, I’ve stumbled my way through my writer’s block a couple times, but those fits of creativity flashed out almost as quickly as they ignited. And there is not a single one of them that is publication-worthy yet.

And then, in a conversation with a new friend in the blogging industry, I gathered the courage to share my work with him. So away he went to read my posts and ideas at my various blogs. For a few days we didn’t talk, but when he returned, he paid me some nice compliments about my writing abilities. Then he asked me why I hadn’t followed through on any of them.

I offered up some very thorough explanations for the unexpected ending that had fallen on each of my projects, and then I threw in some vague plans for picking one or two of them back up. To keep this part of what’s becoming a long story short, I’ll just say that this conversation was enough to get the creative juices flowing again.
